Wigwe’s Death: RCCG Suspends Pastor Whose Wife Threw Lavish Birthday Party

The City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos has taken decisive action by suspending Pastor Idowu Iluyomade. This suspension follows a public outcry over the extravagant birthday party thrown by his wife, Dr. Siju Iluyomade, shortly after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, the former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc.

Herbert Wigwe, who was a respected member of the Parish, tragically died in a helicopter crash in February. The crash also claimed the lives of his wife, Chizoba; their son, Chizi; and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group). The incident left the community in mourning, and many found the timing of the celebratory event hosted by Dr. Siju Iluyomade to be in poor taste.

According to ChurchTimes, the decision to suspend Pastor Idowu Iluyomade was made by the governing council of the RCCG, not by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the church. A top pastor, who chose to remain anonymous, explained the rationale behind the suspension, stating, “It was not Pastor Adeboye that suspended him. The governing council decided to suspend him. I think it’s a decision in the right direction. Though some believe it is coming late. They needed to investigate some of the things people were saying against him and the church.”

The suspension, reported by Daily Trust, was communicated to Pastor Iluyomade via a letter over the weekend. In the aftermath of his suspension, Pastor Charles Kpandei of RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11 has been appointed to replace him.

The controversy began when Dr. Siju Iluyomade hosted an opulent birthday party at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event saw the attendance of numerous distinguished personalities, leading to widespread criticism. Many people felt that it was inappropriate to celebrate so lavishly so soon after the death of a prominent member of the church and his family. The timing and nature of the celebration were seen as insensitive, sparking a backlash within the church community and beyond.

The suspension of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade reflects the RCCG’s response to the public’s concerns and its commitment to maintaining decorum and sensitivity during periods of mourning. The church’s decision underscores the importance it places on the reputation of its leadership and the need to address actions that could potentially harm its image and standing within the community.

Herbert Wigwe’s death was a significant loss for the church and the larger community. He was known for his contributions to the banking sector and his involvement in various philanthropic activities. His passing, along with his wife, son, and a notable business leader, was a tragedy that deeply affected many people.

In light of this tragedy, the lavish celebration held by Dr. Siju Iluyomade was viewed by many as a stark contrast to the somber mood expected after such a loss. The criticism was not just about the timing but also about the nature of the event, which some felt was a display of insensitivity and a lack of respect for the grieving families.

The RCCG’s decision to suspend Pastor Iluyomade sends a clear message about the expectations of its leaders and their families. It highlights the need for leaders to exhibit behaviors that reflect the values of the church, especially during times of collective grief and mourning. The move also shows the church’s willingness to take corrective actions when necessary to uphold its principles and the trust of its congregation.

As the church moves forward, the appointment of Pastor Charles Kpandei is seen as a step towards restoring confidence and ensuring that the leadership is aligned with the expectations and values of the RCCG community. The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance leaders must maintain between personal celebrations and public responsibilities, especially in times of loss and mourning.
