Twin sisters Gloria and Victoria Guerrier created history when they emerged as the top two graduating students of West Hempstead Secondary School in Los Angeles, United States. The 17-year-old twins emerged as the best of their class; Gloria made a 105.3 GPA to become valedictorian, while Victoria, with a 104.9 GPA, took the salutatorian position.
The twins described this achievement as the realization of a lifetime dream. “It was nice just to know that I made it and achieved my dream,” Gloria said. Victoria concluded, “We had been working for this for a long time, but you never know what can happen in four years, so we’re very happy with how things turned out.”
They said their competitive nature helped them make continuous improvements in academics. “Whenever I got a grade that didn’t match hers, we always used to compete and that really helped us improve,” Victoria said. “It’s like the saying goes: ‘Iron sharpens iron,'” Gloria said. “That really helped us grow.”
West Hempstead High School Principal Joseph Pumo said he is proud of the Guerrier sisters and from the beginning, it was obvious they had a determination to make things work. “You could tell they were special from the moment you met them. Their ability to set goals, create a plan, and stick with it is what makes them exceptional,” he added.
In addition to their academic achievements, the Guerrier sisters succeeded on the track, capturing All-State honors as seniors in track and field and will continue competing in the sport into college.
The twins will be enrolling at Yale University in Connecticut, majoring in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence. Victoria is interested in neural technology, hoping to enable such patients who suffer from physical disabilities with the use of technology. Gloria is oriented toward science and math and will focus on devices and apparatuses for consumers.
Victoria encouraged the younger students to overcome self-doubts. “We all have those thoughts of, ‘Can I do it?’ but anything is possible if you set your mind to it,” she said.
Their journey will continue at Yale as the sisters look to make a difference in computer science and artificial intelligence.
