Tobi Amusan will be a key contender in the highly competitive women’s 100m hurdles at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite experiencing mixed performances since her world title victory in 2022 in Oregon, Amusan remains the fastest woman ever in this event, marking her as a formidable threat.
The Paris Olympics are set to commence on July 24, with the opening ceremony on the River Seine two days later. The Athletics events will begin on August 1, but the women’s 100m hurdles will kick off on August 7.
Masai Russell is currently the fastest woman this year, having clocked 12.25 seconds at the US Olympic trials in June, securing her spot for Paris. Following closely is former World U-20 champion Ackera Nugent, who recorded a time of 12.28 seconds at the Jamaican national trials. France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela and the American duo of Alaysha Johnson and Grace Stark are tied for third, each posting a time of 12.31 seconds. Russell, Johnson, and Stark will represent Team USA at the Olympics.
Reigning world champion Danielle Williams has not made the top 10 this year; her best time of 12.46 seconds places her 14th. Amusan, who was recently in the top 10, has been pushed down to 12th with her season’s best of 12.40 seconds. The Tokyo Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, shares the 10th spot with Kendra Harrison, the second-fastest woman ever in this event, both timing at 12.39 seconds.
The current rankings of the fastest 100m hurdlers this year are as follows:
1. Masai Russell (USA) – 12.25 seconds
2. Ackera Nugent (Jamaica) – 12.28 seconds
3. Cyrena Samba-Mayela (France) – 12.31 seconds
3. Alaysha Johnson (USA) – 12.31 seconds
3. Grace Stark (USA) – 12.31 seconds
6. Tonea Marshall (USA) – 12.36 seconds
6. Nadine Visser (Netherlands) – 12.36 seconds
8. Nia Ali (USA) – 12.37 seconds
8. Pia Skrzyszowska (Poland) – 12.37 seconds
10. Kendra Harrison (USA) – 12.39 seconds
10. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico) – 12.39 seconds
Amusan’s performances this season have been promising, but she faces stiff competition from the likes of Russell, Nugent, and the strong American contingent. As the Paris 2024 Olympics approach, the women’s 100m hurdles event is shaping up to be a thrilling contest, with several athletes capable of claiming the top spot. Amusan’s experience and record-breaking speed make her one to watch as the competition unfolds.
