Tinubu’s Government Raises Passport Fees, New Details Emerge

The Nigerian government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light to hike the fees for Nigerian passports. This change will kick in on September 1, 2024. DCI Kenneth Udo, who speaks for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), shared this news in a statement on Wednesday.

The government’s raising of fees is part of its plan to keep Nigerian passports high-quality and trustworthy. Udo says the new prices will make a 32-page passport book good for 5 years go up from Thirty-Five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00) to Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00). In the same way, a 64-page passport book good for 10 years, will cost more jumping from Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00) to One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00).

Keep in mind that passport fees for Nigerians living abroad won’t change giving some relief to the Diaspora community. The NIS said sorry for any trouble the increase might cause to people who want to apply but stressed that they needed to adjust the fees to keep providing good service and passport standards.

This change has got Nigerians talking, with many worried about how much more they’ll have to pay with the economy as it is now. Still, the NIS promised the public they’d stay committed to being open and giving good service saying that changing the fees will help make getting a passport easier.

The Tinubu government’s choice to raise passport costs shows its aim to boost national security and improve the quality of state-issued papers. At the same time, it tries to balance these goals with the money troubles that people face.
