Timothy Iroegbunam’s international future is attracting a lot of attention. A very talented midfielder, who played significantly well in the Premier League for Aston Villa during 2023/24 season has recently moved on to Everton signing a four-year contract for around €11m.
While Iroegbunam has represented England at various youth levels, he was born by Nigerian parents in England and this makes him be rooted in Nigeria. He is 21 and yet to earn an international cap for England or Nigeria. However, as he prepares to join Sean Dyche’s Everton, there are signs that he may opt to play for his fatherland at the international level.
According to OwnGoalNigeria, Iroegbunam wants to represent Nigeria than playing for England. It should be noted that despite his spell with English national team youth teams, he still feels connected with his roots back in Nigeria. The report also states that if given a chance the NFF would pull the strings and call Iroegbunam into the squad.
Based on FotMob data, Iroegbunam had a fantastic year statistically winning more aerial duels than 92% of EPL players while also making 77% more defensive actions than other midfielders.
His performance underscores his readiness and potential to contribute significantly, whether for Everton or potentially for Nigeria on the international stage.
