Bruno Onyemaechi, one of the outstanding defenders in the Super Eagles of Nigeria, stole the headline in Liga Portugal as he opened the scoring in Boavista’s 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora. The outstanding 25-year-old defender, who has been in very good form since the start of the season, scored his first goal in the 23rd minute from a throw-in inside the 18-yard box during the round-five league match.
Boavista, led by head coach Cristiano Bacci then doubled their advantage deep into first-half injury time as midfielder Ilija Vukotic tucked away the chance from close range. It was then supposed to be a straightforward win for the Porto-based club. But in an incredible twist of events in the second half of the game, Estrela da Amadora finished with the momentum and managed to overturn Boavista’s lead.
Former Manchester United player Luis Nani inspired the comeback for Estrela, pulling one goal back before Joao Rodrigues equalized late in the match. Boavista took an early lead but was forced to share the spoils, which denied them a crucial win.
Onyemaechi took to social media to celebrate his first goal of the season in the aftermath of the match. Super Eagles defender Onyemaechi was full of excitement to have opened his goal account with the club this season and had taken to his X handle, formerly X, to express that feeling. In a rather jocular and subliminal manner, he reached out to Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly via the same platform. The lighthearted post by Onyemaechi went thus: “Scored my first goal of the season today, make una help me tag Todd Boehly abeg I wan see something.”
That message sent the internet abuzz, as for many, it was a soft call to Chelsea’s co-owner and perhaps a direct signal of his ambitions to join the London Premier League powerhouse. Onyemaechi has been one of the standout performers in the current season, and the goal against Estrela adds to his growing reputation.
However, in the process, Onyemaechi’s contribution doesn’t go past satisfying the fans and analysts alike despite the disappointment of not securing all three points. Boavista still hunt for their first league win of the season; next, they face Portuguese powerhouse Benfica.
Statistics from FotMob show that the goal marked Onyemaechi’s first of the 2023/24 season, and continued form could see him attract interest from major European clubs in the near future.
