The Nigerian national team has surged from the 42nd position to the 28th spot in the latest FIFA rankings, as announced by the World Football governing body. Additionally, the Super Eagles have elevated from sixth to third place in Africa, marking their highest ranking since May 2013.
This remarkable climb can be attributed to the Super Eagles’ impressive performance at the recently concluded African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they secured the silver medal after finishing as runners-up. Despite a valiant effort throughout the tournament, Nigeria succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Cote d’Ivoire in the final.
In the updated rankings, Cote d’Ivoire also saw a significant rise, moving from 49th to 39th in the world. Meanwhile, Morocco and Senegal maintained their positions as the top-ranked African teams.
Argentina retained its top spot globally, followed by France and Brazil in second and third place, respectively. The FIFA Men’s World Ranking is a comprehensive system that evaluates the performance of men’s national teams based on their results in FIFA-recognized full international matches.
Teams earn points according to the outcomes of these matches, with the most successful teams securing higher rankings. The next FIFA world ranking is scheduled for release on April 4, 2024.
