Rena Wakama: History-Making D’Tigress Coach Reacts to Paris 2024 Win

It will be recalled that the recent success of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress at Paris 2024 Olympics raised a lot of concern from Rana Wakama, who is their Coach. Playing at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France defeated heavily favoured Australian team by 75-62 to win the title and Australia had a FIBA world ranking of three.

Ezzine Kalu returned for the first time since a pay row at Tokyo 2020 and led D’Tigeresses with 19 points as they claimed their maiden Olympic victory in two decades.

Speaking to FIBA, a joyful Wakama said: “we are planning on going into the tournament and give all our best not minding how big their countries can be. I-am-so-proud-and-excited-for-this-group ” Surprise(3): we’ve got a whole bunch of hungry, shook the world little girls,” she said.

Wakama, a graduate of Western Carolina University, had another message for the Bulldogs’ next opponents if sent their way after watching her team fight to extend its season. “We are tough. Thats just who we are, its in our DNA and we dont back down. Im excited to bring a lot of energy, I have a passion ” she said.

With a win in their opening game, D’Tigress have taken the first but most important step forward to securing qualification for the next round where they will face France and Canada. The top two teams from each group, plus the best of third irrespective over groups, advance per tournament structure.
