Following the Super Falcons’ disappointing elimination from Paris 2024 Olympics after a 3-1 defeat to Japan, captain Rasheedat Ajibade has spoken out. This was Nigeria’s first appearance in the women’s football event since Beijing 2008 Olympics but they failed to live up to expectation.
The campaign began with a narrow defeat of one-nil against Brazil for the Falcons followed by another one-nil loss to world champions Spain. Eventually, they were defeated by Japan 3-1 thereby leading their exit from the competition in their group stages.
According to ESPN, this year’s outcomes were similar to those of 2008 Olympics: Nigeria encountered three losses respectively at scores of 1-0, 1-0 and 3-1 conceding five goals and scored only one. It was still the same even after sixteen years.
In an Instagram message, Ajibade – who featured in all three matches played by the team at the tournament-poured out her heart (no pun intended) over their premature exit and thankfulness to Nigerian fans. In the end a disappointing result for our team after 3 hard fought tests against some of the best football teams in World Football. “Thank you for all the love and support!! All of you are appreciated. Also, what an absolute honour to lead and play with this wonderful group of girls. We will keep on working hard to come back stronger.
If a word of prayer, in all we give glory and thanks to God.
