One weird incident that occurred at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was when a parent collapsed upon being informed that his child, whom he believed was graduating, was still in the second year. According to a report on 3news.com, the unfortunate incident happened at the graduation ceremony at the office of the Dean of Students.
Dr. Norris Bekoe, University Relations Officer at KNUST, urged parents to be more concerned about the academic status of their wards. He called on guardians to make it a habit to demand from their children proof of payment of school fees and also show interest in their children’s performance and conduct while at school. According to Dr. Bekoe, such students neglect their books and receive low CGPA, compelling them to reapply for fresh admissions to restart their programmes. According to the 3news.com report, all these are done without the parents knowing.
This collapse points out one major factor that the academic system needs: improved communication between the student and the family. The advice by Dr. Bekoe follows to the effect that parents should be engaged in ascertaining that their children do not fall behind in schoolwork and know their current academic status. This case reminds the parents of the need to get actively involved in their children’s education so that such devastating surprises do not happen.
