Nigerian Innovator Develops Affordable Lighting Solution Using Water and Salt
Samuel Yakubu, a talented Nigerian, has achieved a breakthrough by inventing a simple yet effective device capable of illuminating homes. Named the WATTer Lamp, this innovation relies on a basic solution of water and salt to produce light.
Yakubu’s journey with the invention dates back to 2003, when he initially experimented with kerosene, unripe fruits, and rechargeable batteries. His primary goal was to create an affordable lighting option accessible to all regardless of social standing.
Speaking to FIJ, Yakubu expressed his initial motivation, stating, “My focus from the beginning was on lighting. I aimed to ensure universal affordability and accessibility, regardless of social status or location. Not everyone can afford generators or solar installations, but with this invention, darkness will no longer be a concern.”
After developing the prototype, Yakubu took a significant step by sending it to China for further refinement and production in 2011. Although communication with the manufacturers faced delays until 2023, Yakubu eventually traveled to China and reached an agreement for production. Subsequently, he returned to Nigeria with a supply of the finalized products.
Describing the device’s simplicity, Yakubu explained that users only need to pour water and salt into the lantern bag, and the light will illuminate.
