A Nigerian man couldn’t contain his excitement as Nigeria clinched victory over Ghana in the 4x100m men’s relay race at the ongoing All African Games. With chants of “Nigeria, Nigeria, Nigeria, number one,” he celebrated the gold medal win, playfully taunting the Ghanaians in the stadium. The video capturing his jubilation was shared by The Nation via its X handle (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, March 20.
Initially jubilant, the Ghanaians’ mood turned somber as the scoreboard confirmed Nigeria as the race winner, dashing their hopes of victory. With the Nigerian team securing first place, the spectator humorously questioned, “Ghana, where are you?” and urged them to “sit down” amidst their disappointment.
The Nigerian quartet completed the race in 38.41 seconds, seizing the gold from Ghana, who had claimed victory in Morocco in 2019. Ghana settled for silver with a time of 38.43 seconds, while Liberia secured bronze in 38.73 seconds.
Reflecting on the victory, Nigerian sprinter Alaba Akintola expressed determination to avenge their previous loss to Ghana. He joked, “Ghana beat us five years ago in Morocco, and I can not endure another defeat from Ghana, so I was even ready to pull a hamstring so that we could beat them, and that is what happened.”
