A Nigerian man, Olajide Obe, expressed his dismay on X after his wedding gift of N50,000 was deemed inadequate by a friend. Olajide, whose friend is soon to be married, offered N50,000 for him to purchase a wedding gift, as he could not attend the ceremony. Upon receiving the bank details and discussing the gift, his friend promptly converted the amount to GBP, equating it to £25, and remarked that the amount was too meager for a wedding gift.
Olajide recounted the exchange: “A certain friend is getting married soon. I asked for his bank details to send him ₦50,000 for a wedding gift since I won’t make it to his wedding. But during our conversation, he mentioned, ‘So na £25 you go give me for wedding gift.’ I was both confused and perplexed. He had already converted the 50k to GBP and felt he deserved more than what it amounted to in pounds. I didn’t want to argue, so I just told him not to be upset.
I decided against sending the money and chose to put my 50k towards a nobler cause instead.” Subsequently, when an X user reached out to Olajide seeking financial help for a friend’s surgery, he generously redirected the funds to assist them.
