Issa, a man who had been working in Qatar for five years, recently faced a heartbreaking discovery upon his return home. In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, a prominent Kenyan media outlet, Issa shared that he had been diligently sending money to his wife in Kenya with the intention of saving for future projects. Over the years, he managed to accumulate over KSh 2.4 million (approximately N13,880,127.67) in savings.
Issa explained that during his time abroad, he had entrusted his wife with the sole access to their joint account, aiming to use the funds to construct a house for his mother before focusing on their own home. However, upon his return to Kenya, he was shocked to discover that the entire savings had been depleted. When he inquired about the funds, his wife informed him that she had used the money to pay for her brother’s school fees.
Throughout his tenure in Qatar, Issa had kept his overseas employment a secret from his family, telling them instead that he was working in Mombasa. This decision was driven by his desire to pursue better opportunities abroad without alarming his family.
Despite the severe setback, Issa expressed some relief that he had not remitted all of his earnings to the shared account. Confronted with the reality of his depleted savings, he was still able to construct a modest house for his mother, albeit not to the extent of his original KSh 1.3 million (about N7,518,402.49) budget. Issa conveyed his deep sense of hurt and disappointment over the situation.
