Lady Reveals Reason for Breaking Off Her Engagement Two Months Before Wedding

A Nigerian woman, known as @diaryofa9jagirl on X, recently shared her story about why she decided to call off her engagement just two months before her wedding day. Despite the considerable financial investments and preparations made, she chose to prioritize her emotional well-being and made the difficult decision to end the relationship.

She recounted that the wedding arrangements were well underway: the venue was booked, a popular comedian and musician were partially paid, and her Vera Wang wedding dress was already purchased. Despite these commitments, she broke off the engagement and even went as far as refunding everyone who had bought the traditional Aso Ebi attire for the wedding.

In her own words, she explained, “I broke off my engagement two months to the wedding. Hall paid for, popular comedian paid for, part payment for popular musician paid for. Vera Wang wedding dress paid for. Broke things off without thinking of all of that and returned everyone’s Aso Ebi money. I was getting married for the wrong reasons and I just couldn’t continue. I made one of the best decisions of my life.”

She elaborated on the internal conflict that led to her decision, revealing that societal pressures played a significant role. As she approached her 30th birthday, she felt an overwhelming pressure to be married, fearing societal judgment for remaining unmarried at that age. This pressure led her to stay in a relationship where she was neither in love nor at peace.

She shared, “It wasn’t. Had to leave the country for a while to sit by the beach in Hawaii. Needed time alone to forgive myself. Because I was going to clock 30 and I don’t know who put it in my head that I had to be married at that time or it would be socially unacceptable to be unmarried at 30. When I complained to an older friend that it didn’t feel right because not only was I not in love but I had no rest in my spirit, she said I’d fall in love inside the marriage but to never let 30 pass me by. So I stayed despite the fact that he was a pathological liar and extremely untrustworthy.”

Her story highlights the importance of making life decisions based on personal happiness and emotional health rather than succumbing to external pressures. She emphasized that although it was a difficult choice, it was ultimately one of the best decisions she had ever made. Her experience serves as a powerful reminder to listen to one’s inner voice and prioritize self-worth and well-being over societal expectations.
