Professional footballer Jude Ighalo has risen in defense of his younger colleague, Victor Osimhen, who recently received criticism after his failed transfer. Osimhen was earlier linked with Chelsea, and he also received an offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli during the transfer window. Despite the speculations, no deal pulled through, leaving Osimhen to stay with his club, Napoli.
The collapse of those potential moves, however, has seen Napoli exclude Osimhen from their first squad and withdraw his jersey number for Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku. This turn of events hasn’t augured well with the fans and commentators, especially back home in Nigeria for Osimhen.
Jude Ighalo is angry that people have criticized Osimhen, never mind the fact that even fellow Nigerians did, without actually being in full possession of the facts. The striker, Ighalo, spoke in a humble manner, in respect of his own nature: “We all make mistakes, we are not perfect.” Indeed, when Ighalo spoke with Osimhen, he could hear the pain and frustration in the young forward’s voice to show the emotional toll the situation has taken on him.
“No human being is perfect, and we have all made mistakes in life, but seeing comments about this young man from his own country people makes me sad, without even knowing what happened,” Ighalo said. I spoke to him, and the pain in his voice-from the way he has been treated-could be felt. This young man plays with his heart and through pain for his country. It’s well; he will be back stronger. We learn every day in life. Happy new month to you all.
Ighalo’s words of encouragement have also driven home the challenges these sportsmen face, and a need for understanding and empathy by fans and the general public.
