The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has brought back a 25 percent discount on fares for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line. This move is part of their effort to make public transport cheaper and more accessible for Lagosians.
Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), made the announcement. The discount will apply from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, encouraging more people to use the rail service during off-peak hours. This helps reduce congestion and makes the train service more efficient.
The news was shared on the Lagos State Government’s official X handle (formerly Twitter) @followlasg. This ensures the information reaches many commuters who use the Blue Line daily. The discount will significantly lower transportation costs for many Lagosians, especially those who can travel during off-peak hours.
Akinajo also announced an increase in daily train trips on the Blue Line, from 54 to 72 starting August 12. This move aims to meet the growing demand for rail transport in Lagos, offering more options and reducing waiting times.
The travel time between Marina and Mile 2 will now be about 18 minutes, down from 25 minutes. This improvement makes the Blue Line even more appealing for commuters who value quick and efficient travel.
The Lagos State Government hopes the new train schedule and fare reduction will ease commuters’ financial burden and encourage more people to use public transport during off-peak hours. This strategy aims to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the city.
Akinajo urged commuters to check the LAMATA website, station information points, and social media for updates on the Blue Line service. The reintroduction of the fare discount and increased train frequency has been well-received by the public. Many see it as a sign of the government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and making life easier for residents.
These changes are expected to have a significant impact on daily commuting patterns. The Blue Line is a key part of Lagos’s transport network, and these improvements will benefit both the government and the people of Lagos. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys to make the most of the new fare structure and improved train service. The Lagos State Government continues to work towards transforming the city’s transportation landscape, making it more efficient, affordable, and user-friendly for all.
