Odunayo is a young Nigerian girl who had previously stayed in the streets before making a giant leap by passing her first examination after being enrolled in junior school. Her story began when she got rescued from the streets of Lagos by this kind-hearted man, Tunde Onakoya, who found her hawking fish. Odunayo was taken off the streets along with her brother two years ago, where they were selling fish instead of attending school.
Tunde Onakoya narrated that Odunayo had suffered at the hands of her inability to get proper education in various forms of abuses. He said he remembered the day he met her: “It was on this day I swore to be a part of their lives and keep them safe forever.” Touched by their situation, Tunde sponsored her education through a fully funded scholarship.
Two years later, Tunde took to Twitter to brag about Odunayo’s progress at school-first year complete, examinations passed. He tweeted, “Today makes it exactly two years since I met Odunayo hawking fish on the streets of Majidun Ikorodu with her little brother. A lot has happened since then, but two weeks ago, she completed her first year of school and passed her examinations.
Odunayo has aspirations to become an entertainer and to study the arts. She is an active participant in both her school and church’s cultural dance clubs. To support this dream, Tunde asked the famous Nigerian actor Lateef Oladimeji to meet with Odunayo and reassure her that this is something that is possible.
Odunayo’s story is just one example of how the power of compassion and education can change life’s course through one person.
