From ‘Alawi’ to Entrepreneurial Success: How a Lady Built a Thriving Business with N320k Saved During NYSC

Despite facing numerous challenges, Nigerian woman Gladys Adija overcame adversity to become a successful businesswoman. Despite getting pregnant while still a student, she persevered and eventually graduated, even completing her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. During her NYSC, she managed to save N320,000 from her stipend, which she used to kickstart her business selling essential food items like garri.

Reflecting on her journey, Gladys, now 27, recounted how she maintained a frugal lifestyle during NYSC, saving most of her allowance despite facing criticism from friends who didn’t understand her financial discipline. She also took on additional jobs, including cleaning, washing, and tutoring, to make ends meet.

Although she was already a mother during her NYSC, her parents helped care for her child. However, her NYSC experience was challenging, leading her to caution against premarital sex, emphasizing the importance of responsibility.

Gladys, now a mother of two, married her child’s father but later divorced due to incompatibility. Despite this, she remains focused on growing her business. Starting with limited funds, she rented a shop and strategically reinvested her profits to expand her product range and meet growing demand.
