Former Nigerian international footballer Benedict Akwuegbu has made a strong appointment in the UK. The 49-year-old ex-Super Eagles striker has become a component of the Temporary Staffing Bank, National Health Service in the UK. His appointment was verified by the recruitment team at Central and North West London NHS Trust. Akwuegbu will be working with nurses and other health professionals, particularly those patients needing special care regarding mental issues. This appointment underlines his commitment to being able to contribute to the community’s well-being outside of sports.
Along with being an NHS ambassador, Akwuegbu was also appointed a student ambassador to Anglia Ruskin University. This means that as a student ambassador, he will be committed to supporting and advising new and current students at the university. His responsibilities will include giving orientation and guiding probable students through their gate into academic life for easy transition into college.
Not only this, but Akwuegbu has also been admitted to Anglia Ruskin University for higher education at the master’s level. Again, this speaks of his commitment to personal and academic development beyond his successful football career.
Akwuegbu’s achievements on the football field are well documented. He was capped 35 times for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, scoring 10 goals between 2000 and 2005, while the clubs he played for over the years include different European and Asian teams: RC Lens in France, clubs in Belgium, Austria, and China. He retired in 2010 after playing for English club Basingstoke Town, which effectively ended his professional football career.
After retirement from active playing, Akwuegbu went into football management. He started his managerial sojourn in 2012 as assistant coach for the Nigerian club Heartland FC. In 2013, he furthered his international coaching career when he signed on as head coach of the Australian football club FC Gratkorn. He later moved back to Nigeria to become the technical director of Mighty Jets FC, a club located in Jos, Plateau State.
The different professions that Akwuegbu has adopted, which include football, education, and health, further elucidate the many facets of his character and the commitment he has to the community not only on but also off the pitch. His recent successes in the UK are a testament to his commitment to self-betterment and community service.
