The Trader unions in the various markets across Ado Ekiti have been proscribed by the monarch to allow farmers access traders equitably without intermediaries as a means of putting an end to excessive pricing.
On Monday, August 12 at a meeting with the market women leadership and members of Ewi-in-Council also known as Oba Adejugbe warned that all madams should go back to their stalls in obedience to government-regulated prices for sundry items. This intervention is regarded as important to address the rising cost of food items that has been a burden on Ado Ekiti populace.
It expressed concern that traders, in most cases with the active collaboration of their associations are giving middlemen a field day to hike prices arbitrarily on tomatoes, pepper,chillies,vatables,palm oil,locust beans,meat and garri. The thing however is that this has placed more financial barriers on the part of consumers, with farmers to just agree into selling prices much lower and allowed traders to even dictate price selling.
The council, in retaliation issued immediate order that prices for some staple food items be significantly reduced: vegetables should go down to N50; pepper is shielded at a maximum of 100 naira; garri wholesales shouldn’t exceed seven hundred and accessible meat commonly retailed per kilo was compelled returned to five thousand four fifty.khg The purpose is to make basic food and commodities available at cheaper rates for residents of Ado Ekiti.
