Eguavoen speaks on resignation, clears air on role with Super Eagles

Augustine Eguavoen has been the subject of wide speculation in recent days, following Nigeria’s draw in their 2025 AFCON qualification match against Rwanda. Veteran tactician Eguavoen was appointed as interim coach of the Super Eagles and started well in the qualification campaign for the forthcoming Morocco tournament. The Super Eagles first recorded an emphatic victory against the Republic of Benin, then went on to record a hard-fought draw against Rwanda in a match where Nigeria was seen as unlucky not to come away with a win.

Despite these good displays, less than a week after the fixture against Rwanda, rumors emerged on how the 59-year-old had quit his interim managerial position. News coming from OwnGoalNigeria insisted that Eguavoen opted to resign, therefore causing a stir among fans and pundits alike. These rumors started at a time when whispers were getting loud that the NFF was likely to reward Eguavoen with an appointment as permanent head coach of the national team.

But in the midst of these speculations, Eguavoen has taken the opportunity to ensure that the records are set straight and to give clarity over his position within the Super Eagles setup. Speaking to the media, as captured by BSN Sport, the ex-Nigerian right-back strongly denied the rumors of resignation while reaffirming his commitment to the team.

Eguavoen went further to clarify that he has never resigned from his appointment. He said, “It’s just unfortunate that people have triggered something that is not true, and in the situation we’re in now, we don’t need negative stories.”

Eguavoen then went ahead to explain that as much as he did have plans for discussions with the leadership of the NFF after recent matches, he was misconstrued to mean resignation. “I only said that after these two games, I would sit down with the hierarchy of the Federation to discuss how I would approach the upcoming fixtures,” he explained. But with that story, I was worried and concerned; whatever people are reading out there is wrong. I am still very much in charge and remain the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation responsible for overseeing the Super Eagles at this moment, and that’s where we stand.

These rumors of Eguavoen’s resignation were, however, surprising, considering the fact that his return to the helm of affairs in the Super Eagles team was his fourth stint as the head coach of the national team. Eguavoen is not strange to such a position, having successfully led Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations. Most notably, he led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish in the 2006 AFCON tournament in Egypt, a feat that stands out in his management ledger.

To this day, Eguavoen’s appointment has been welcomed as Nigeria starts its journey of qualification to the 2025 AFCON. These wealth of experience he had gotten-being a player and coach-have helped greatly in helping the team out of the problem of international competition. He is with the team on an interim basis, but there have been increasing calls, even with the strong start, on the NFF to make his appointment permanent.

For now, though, Eguavoen keeps his priorities real and true as he goes ahead to pilot the Super Eagles through the qualification phase of the AFCON and putting the team in good condition for ensuing matches. He was still committed to the team and the NFF, keeping his appointment as the Technical Director while helping develop Nigeria’s football to its best standard.

With the rumors finally put to bed, Eguavoen should get back to work with the Super Eagles, as Nigerian football fans look to what appears to be an exciting qualification journey into AFCON.
