Dangote Sets New Date for Petrol Supply as Two Nigerian Refineries Gear Up to Commence Operations

Amidst Nigeria’s prolonged petrol scarcity, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has announced that two Nigerian refineries, namely the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, are undergoing turnaround maintenance and will be fully operational this year.

Additionally, plans are underway to ensure the Kaduna Refinery becomes functional before the end of 2025.

Senator Ubah emphasized the importance of completing these facilities along with the supply from the Dangote Refinery to meet Nigeria’s fuel consumption needs. He urged the government and stakeholders to establish modular refineries to enhance the country’s crude oil refining capacity.

Senator Ubah reiterated his commitment to ensuring the refineries are operational by the end of 2024, stating that a technical team from the committee will visit the refineries bi-weekly to monitor progress.

The recent visit to the Port Harcourt refinery confirmed its readiness, while the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) expects to complete rehabilitation work at the Kaduna refinery by the end of 2024, as announced by the Managing Director of KRPC, Mustafa Sugungun, during a meeting with the Senate Adhoc Committee on Petroleum Downstream.

Meanwhile, the Dangote Refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has postponed petrol production from May due to the installation of a residue fluid catalytic cracking unit to enhance sustainable refining.

Despite the delay, the refinery has commenced distribution of diesel and aviation fuel, resulting in a drop in prices. It aims to begin supplying petrol to the domestic market soon, aiming to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products.
