The Ebonyi State Government has officially announced that full operations at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport will commence in May 2024. Ngozi Obichukwu, the State Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, shared this information during an inspection of the airport’s runway at the Presidential Lounge. She explained that the airport will initiate full flight operations after completing the asphalt laying on the runway, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring the safety of air travel.
Obichukwu stated, “We are making sure that the airways are safe, and the transporters that are using flight are equally safe.” She acknowledged the initial challenges with the runway, which required a change from concrete to asphalt based on recommendations from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The governor’s eagerness to establish the airport as a significant travel hub for Ebonyi was highlighted.
The Chuba Okadigbo International Airport was first commissioned by the former governor, David Umahi, in 2023. However, the state government decided to undertake runway rehabilitation, leading to the current developments. Obichukwu provided insights into the progress, stating that the State Government has paid 30 percent of the advance payment to the contractors, with funds guaranteed by a reputable bank. She expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and announced the expected commencement of operations in May.
Upon the completion of the runway, the airport aims to become a crucial economic center for Ebonyi and the entire South East region. It is anticipated to serve as a gateway for Nigerians abroad and enhance connectivity with neighboring countries like Cameroon, Chad, and other African nations.
In a related development, the federal government assured that the Ogun State Agro-Cargo Airport was in its final stage and would positively impact people’s lives upon completion. Governor Abiodun mentioned that the world-class airport in Ogun State would commence operations before the end of 2023. Finance Minister Wale Edun, after inspecting the airport with Governor Abiodun, emphasized the project’s significance as a game-changer for the state.
