Coach Randy Waldrum resigns from Super Falcons, Cites personal issues.

The American handler, Randy Waldrum, has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons. The 67-year-old tactician tendered his resignation letter to the Nigeria Football Federation due to health issues involving his wife. Waldrum, who is also head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women’s soccer team, cited the emotional toll his wife’s condition had taken on him in his reason for his departure.

Waldrum was to be appointed head coach three years ago and had rejected the Super Falcons appointment offer first made in 2017. After rethinking and reconsidering, he took up the offer in 2020. Ultimately, Waldrum oversaw some important milestones from the team, with the sealing of their qualification to next year’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. His team, the Super Falcons, put up a good performance in Australia and New Zealand, finishing 10th in the tournament after being knocked out in the Round of 16 by England.

Aside from his feat in the World Cup, Waldrum also created history by guiding the Super Falcons through to the Olympics for the first time in 16 years. The Nigerians recorded an unforgettable win over World No. 10 Australia and secured a draw against World No. 3 England during the qualifying rounds, underlining how the team had grown in his tutelage.

Waldrum also addressed the reason for his resignation in the letter obtained by Nigerian journalist Tobi Adepoju of Oganla Media, dated September 12. It has been a very tough couple of weeks since the Olympics itself, between my wife’s health situation and all the attendant worries that go with it. After a lot of serious thinking, I hereby resign my position as head coach of the Super Falcons. This will afford the NFF the ample time to get the next manager to take over this fabulous team.

Now, Waldrum’s resignation has finally created a big void as the NFF looks for a new head coach to take over the Super Falcons mantle. His exit also comes at a period when the country’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles, is still searching for a permanent manager. It’s also yet to be seen whether Augustine Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles on interim duty during their recent AFCON qualifiers, would be carried over into the upcoming World Cup qualifiers next month.

The NFF will now focus on securing new leadership for both national teams ahead of crucial international competitions.
