ASUU Raises New Issues with Tinubu, Strike Threatened Again

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day strike notice to the administration of President Bola Tinubu, seeking resolution of grievances that have remained since 2009. Emmanuel Osodeke who heads ASUU called for the conclusion of the renegotiation process of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, using the 2021 Nimi Briggs offered’s draft as the baseline.

Working without salaries of members that were on strike in 2022 and unpaid salaries for those in sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct positions as well as those affected by the integrated pay roll and personnel information system IPPIS are other issues nairobi is fighting for. ASUU also asked for more assistance towards actualizing public universities and settling the accrued academic allowances.

Equally, the union made pronouncements on university management issues like action on visitation panel reports, the illegal dissolution of governing bodies, and implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution UTAS, among others. ASUU complained about unreasonable delay on the part of the Government in commencing and implementing the measures which have been promised.

The second ultimatum notice of 14 days that took effect on September 23, 2024, came after the first notice of 21 days and directed the government to do something in this timeframe. ASU has cautioned that if their requests are not heeded, an industrial action would be called wherein the union would bear no responsibility. Their demands are in unison with the current attempts aimed at improving the level of funding, management, and the working environment in Nigerian state institutions of higher learning. The union, as noted earlier, in 2022 went on a lengthy industrial action due to similar complaints. In country cited “day strike in country.” Therefore, it is most appropriate to embark on lawful national mobilization only as a preparation to wage a war of destruction. The following includes, but is not limited to: a) break the law with liberty, or be in contempt, or an apology, and carry on with lawful conduct.
