A lady who stays as a medic overseas has recently shared her traumatic experience after spending 13 days in Nigeria. In a tweet that went viral, she stated that her N20 million program visit made her very sad about the high cost of living.
While here, she went to local markets for food shopping and was amazed at the outrageous prices. How do people survive when they have no money? For example, four yams cost twenty thousand naira, A small bowl of tomatoes was sold for thirteen thousand naira while small onions were priced at eight thousand naira which was perplexing. She expressed disappointment over the gap in standards of living arguing that while people waste money on luxurious things daily, many are deprived of basic needs.
Her health deteriorated, and this caused her blood pressure to go beyond dangerous levels: above 200! It was so bad that she couldn’t even go out because she felt so depressed until she left Nigeria. Her tweet showed her inner self anguish and pain for the poor asking how they eat.
She also mentioned the charity work that some Canadian sponsors engaged in but spending over N20 million worth of donations without satisfying the pressures for such help. She made a heartfelt plea in her tweet, “God please don’t make me live in Nigeria again.”
This experience of the healthcare worker brings to light the harsh economic reality of living in Nigeria as well as their plight and forces one to reflect on the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
